Forums: Grand Lodge > Popups

I'm a recent visitor to this wiki but I wanted to make a helpful suggestion. When you clik on links in your wiki, popups appear. I'm not against advertising mind you, you have to pay for your hosting somehow. But these popups cover up things like the search field and the navigation links and there doesn't appear to be any way to close them. All in all they take away from the user experience and make the site annoying to use. The site is overall very useful and informative but I really hope you do something about these popups.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of the popups. I know that Wikia includes ads on all pages for anyone who is not logged in to the site. Perhaps these are what you're seeing. Would you mind creating an account and logging in and letting me know if that fixes the problem? If it is the case, then we might need to make it clearer on the front page that the ads will go away if you log in, but we can't remove them from the site since it's part of what comes with having the wiki hosted on Wikia.

The popups are done by some of the advertisers who pay wikia (not us) as Yoda says so we don't have control. To further what he says above, I have noticed one annoying popup for a virus scan software that pops up about 1 time in 5. Once you create an account and sign in, the only adds you will see when logged in are the ones on the front page across the top, unfortunatly I've had the virus scan one pop up from there once as well, but instead of 3-4 chances to get it per page, you only have one chance per log on. ( I hope this is making sense, my brain is fried)

I think I encountered the situation you're talking about; it covers our sidebar, search field, logo, and renders the user controls at the top of the page nonfunctional. Historically Wikia's been good about killing problematic ad behavior, and I think this is one situations they take steps to quash. I'll alert them to the problem.
