Avernus is ruled by the archdevil Barbatos (pronounced BAR-ba-tus)[1], who holds the keys to Hell's gates.[2]
Appearance
Barbatos appears shrouded in a ragged old cloak, his features masked by impenetrable shadows, even other archdevils have not seen his face. What parts of him are glimpsed on occassion reveal an alien pysiology, even to that of devils, he often walks hunched, with a cane, roots like tendrils like some grotesque mockery of a wise hermits beard shuddering out from the darkness surroundding his face and its three glowing red eyes.[3]
