The akata are terrifying, animalistic predators from the dark tapestry beyond Golarion's solar system. More terrifying than these predators' hunger is their horrific manner of reproduction that could only come from a creature born far from the light of any sun.

The akata are about the size and proportions of a lion except instead of manes they boast a collection of tendrils encircling their neck. Their flesh is rubbery and quite unlike normal flesh. They weigh around 400 pounds. The most unnerving thing about their appearance is their complete and utter silence. They make no sound when they move, no roars or braying even as they close in to tear prey limb from limb. Akatas have no lung or vocal cords and so are unable to make any sound.[1]

Habitat & EcologyEdit

Akatas live where ever the comets carrying their cocoons land. The akatas begin their life cycle in outer space. There they hibernate on comets and meteors waiting until they crash into a planet with life on it so that they can feast. When on a planet and active, akatas generally hunt in packs of up to thirty with bigger packs being lead by large akata known as akata princes.[2]

The akatas ecology is totally alien. They communicate using both visual means and smell. They can survive without any sort of air and are burned by salt water as if it were acid. Full immersion is salt water is fatal to akata. The most bizarre part of the akata is its method of reproduction. When it bites a creature its bite contains hundreds of its microscopic young. They cannot do anything until the creature dies. When the creature dies the strongest akata young latches onto the brain cell and re-energizes it, reanimating the creature as a zombie host. It continues to grow until it forces its way out through the bottom jaw creating what looks like a horribly oversized, swollen tongue. These host creatures become known as void zombies.[2]

The akata's abilities are all alien in nature and its void bite is completely unknown on any natural creature of Golarion. The bite of an akata can infect its victim with its own microscopic young and is part of the akata's breeding cycle. The young once inside the host function like disease, gradually killing their host.[1]
